Plate armor is a type of apparel (armor) that functions as low-tech full body armor. It can be crafted out of various materials.

It has a heavy move speed penalty of -0.8 c/s when worn. As such, it may be wise to leave it in a stockpile until entering combat.

Acquisition

Plate armor can be crafted at a Fueled smithy or Electric smithy once the Plate armor research project has been completed. They require Stuff 170 Stuff (Metallic/Woody, 1700 for SMVs), 38,000 ticks (10.56 mins) of work, and a Crafting skill of 7.

It can also be found on the following raider kinds:

Raider Kind Chance Average Quality Health
Archer chief 100% Normal 100%
Berserker chief 100% Normal 100%
Champion Content added by the Royalty DLC 100% Normal 70-100%

Analysis

Compared to other forms of armor, plate is tied with the much more protective cataphract armorContent added by the Royalty DLC for most severe movement penalty, at -0.8c/s. Plate also tends to be cheaper to make in terms of materials, but has less base durability. This can be mitigated by making it with more durable materials, such as plasteel.

A set of steel plate armor (Steel 170) is cheaper than a full set of flak armor, including vest, jacket and pants (Steel 190 + Cloth 110 + Component 3). In return, plate has much lower Sharp protection than the flak vest alone, though it protects the arms and legs better. It doesn't last as long as flak, having only 290 hp compared to flak's 600 hp. Its move speed penalty is heavier, at -0.8c/s compared to -0.36/s for the whole flak set. Flak vests can also be used with dusters made of devilstrand or better for more protection and a smaller move speed penalty.

A set of plasteel plate armor is slightly cheaper than a set of marine armor, but is roughly equal to recon armor (worse against Sharp, very slightly better against Blunt / Heat). Plasteel plate is still less protective than a flak vest for the torso, neck, and vital organs; plate only protects the limbs better. One advantage of the Plasteel plate armor is that, having 810 hp, it lasts much longer than the marine armor, which only has 340 hp. Its movement penalty is heavier at -0.8c/s, compared to -0.4/s for marine armor, and no penalty for recon armor.

A legendary steel plate armor is equivalent to normal cataphract armor at 1/3 of the market value, while legendary plasteel plate armor is equivalent to excellent cataphract while costing 40 less plasteel to produce. With a Production SpecialistContent added by the Ideology DLC and a GenieContent added by the Biotech DLC (or anyone with the Great Crafting gene), masterwork and legendary quality armors can be created from the beginning of the game.
