Steel is the primary resource for mid to late game construction, and is therefore vital. Without steel, you cannot build new power generators, conduits, batteries, temperature regulators like coolers and heaters, or turrets and sandbags, so ensure that you have a steady supply. Steel appears at your crash site when a new game is started. After this steel is exhausted, it can be obtained through random drops, trading, mining, disassembling mechanoids, or melting slag into useable steel at an Electric Smelter. Steel can be mined from Compacted Steel veins, which can be found inside hills and mountains. Industrial traders also buy and sell steel.

| description = A very beautiful and expensive resource. Can sometimes be found off the bodies of raiders, as well as those who pop out of random cryptosleep caskets in buildings around the map, but the primary source is gold veins. You can sell gold to certain traders to get a staggering amount of cash, or craft it into golden sculptures that are perhaps the most valuable items in the game. It can also be used to create extremely beautiful furniture and structures that will help obtain that coveted "Beautiful Environment" mood bonus for your colonists, though this may be wasteful unless you are swimming in cash already and don't need much extra.

NOTE: As of version Alpha 9, colonists can suffer from a "High Expectations" mood debuff if your colony becomes too rich. Make sure you have plenty of mood-boosting effects to buffer against this before you start accumulating some real wealth.

Used for stone construction

Stone is produced from rock rubble via a Stonecutter's table after it is researched. To create stone right click the table, click 'Bills', and use the + and - buttons to set how many pieces of rubble you wish to consume. You must have a colonist with 'crafting' enabled in the Overview menu. Stone blocks are always produced in batches of 20 per rock chunk. Stone can also be obtained by deconstructing abandoned structures that are randomly scattered throughout the map, though these must be Claimed first.

Cut stone can be used to supplement other valuable resources, namely steel and wood. It can be used to craft walls (even the conduit walls that carry electricity), or fancy floors with faster than default walk speed and less mood penalty. Cut stone can be used to craft everything from doors, automatic doors, tables, benches, to beds and royal beds. It is also the prime resource for crafting sculptures for colonists with the Artist skill.

NOTE: While doors made of stone are very hard for enemies to destroy, they also take a _long_ time to open, so consider making the Autodoor variant to save time. It also doesn't give nearly as much rest effectiveness as wooden beds do.

NOTE: Stone walls and structures appear to take 3 times as much damage from explosive weapons (like Mortars) as structures made of other materials.

Lumber

Woodlog b.png

Wood from trees or other fibrous plants. Useful for building structures and weapons. It is a good fuel for campfires and generators, and can be refined into chemfuel. In a pinch, a piece of wood can be used as a weapon or a leg.

Wood is a construction and crafting material vital in the early game.

Metals

Bioferrite b.png

An exotic metal-like fibrous substance with both organic and metallic properties. Bioferrite is produced by microscopic mechanites as they process organic material. In cases of disordered mechanite behavior, this happens in a chaotic, cancer-like way.
The material is known to interact with some types of psychic flows. If pressurized under specific conditions, bioferrite becomes extremely flammable, making it a useful fuel.

Gold b.png

The most seductive metal of them all. While it is too soft to be of much practical use, it is strikingly beautiful and never tarnishes. Millions have died in attempting to feed the endless human thirst for gold.

Gold is a very beautiful and valuable resource.

Plasteel c.png

Advanced spacer tech structural material. Plasteel is extremely strong due to its unique molecular structure.

Plasteel is the strongest material in the game. Commonly used for high tech items, especially ship engines and other modules, which are needed to build a spaceship to escape the planet and win the game.

Silver c.png

This metal is mostly used as a commodity currency. It can also be used for making decorations.

Silver is a precious, uncommon material. It is recognized as a trade currency which all traders will readily accept.

Steel b.png

An iron-carbon metal alloy used for building a huge variety of structures, weapons, and machines.

Steel is a raw resource, crucial throughout the game for different purposes, such as construction of various structures, and production of weapons and armor.

Uranium c.png

A dark, heavy metal. While it is best known as a fuel for nuclear devices, its extreme density and hardness also make it good for making certain weapons, armor, and ammunition.

Uranium is one of the rarest materials in the game. It can be used to craft powerful, but slow blunt weapons, and a required element in the construction of certain late-game constructions, most notably the end-game ship.

Stone Blocks

Granite blocks.png

Blocks of solid granite. Granite is a very hard stone.

Granite is the strongest of all stone blocks and is best suited to build walls in the fighting area.

Limestone blocks.png

Blocks of solid limestone.

Besides being the second most durable stone type after granite, limestone blocks have no practical advantage over other stone blocks.

Marble blocks.png

Blocks of solid marble. Marble is a soft, beautiful stone, known for being easy to sculpt.

Of all stone block materials, marble has the highest Beauty factor and stands alone as the sole stone to have a beauty bonus, and so is best suited to create art for your base. It is also a close second in terms of market value per unit of work, after sandstone, so is well suited to craft items for sale in bulk.

Sandstone blocks.png

Blocks of solid sandstone. Sandstone is a relatively soft rock and chips easily.

Sandstone is the quickest stone type to work with, making it well suited for stone constructions that need to be built quickly. It also has the highest market value per unit of work so is the best stone type for crafting items for sale in bulk.

Slate blocks.png

Blocks of solid slate. A dull-looking rock that chips easily.

The only advantage of slate blocks is that they are the least heavy. If for some reason you need to carry stone blocks or chunks in a caravan in bulk, slate might be the best choice.
