The stage at which an animal is currently in is determined by their growth stat - they are born at 0% growth, and become an adult at 100% growth. The growth at which an animal becomes a juvenile is given by <code><abbr title="Defined in the animal's defs file, found in Data/Core/Defs/ThingDefs_Races">juvenile_min_age</abbr>/<abbr title="Similarly defined in the animal's defs file, but also shown in-game as 'Growth time'">adult_min_age</abbr></code>.

At each gametick, the increase to the animal's growth is multiplied by <code>1/(ticks_to_adulthood)</code>, where <code>ticks_to_adulthood</code> is the difference between the animal's reported "Growth time" expressed in ticks, and how many ticks have passed since the animal was born.
