Combat Performance
 +
It only takes a single shot to the torso to kill an unarmored human with a sniper rifle, or around 2 shots against a human with a normal armor vest. The sniper rifle can also instantly destroy digits and eyeballs, and will always cause lethal brain damage regardless of the victim's headgear and what quality it is. It only takes a single sniper rifle shot to an unprotected human limb to cripple it. Without factoring in any cover or shooter's accuracy, the sniper rifle has an average time to down of 12.9 seconds against unarmored people or 16.8 seconds against a human with an armor vest.

Sniper rifles can be crafted at a Production Facility 1}} once the Required Research}}|Required Research research project has been completed. They require Required Resources, of work, and a Skill 1}} skill of Skill 1 Level.

Sniper rifles can also be purchased from outlander and orbital combat suppliers or from outlander faction bases, or recovered from raiders:

Since the sniper rifle has very poor close-quarters accuracy, is single-shot in nature and has a long time between shots, the sniper rifle is a skill-heavy weapon. A healthy level 11 traitless shooter, level 7 careful shooter or level 13 trigger-happy can somewhat efficiently use the sniper rifle up to 32 cells. However, a level 17 traitless shooter, level 14 careful shooter or level 18 trigger-happy is advisable to efficiently use the assault rifle up to its maximum range of 45 cells.

Obtaining
Sniper rifles have the longest range of all weapons, along with excellent long-distance accuracy. With high per-shot damage, they have a propensity to destroy limbs. Therefore, they are a poor choice if you intend to take prisoners after a raid.
+
Assault rifles can be purchased from outlander and orbital combat suppliers, or obtained from the following raider kinds:
 +

 +
Pirates:
 +
* Pirate - 12.8% chance (normal quality on average, 40-150% health)
 +

 +
Outlanders:
 +
* Town Guard - 3.8% chance (poor quality on average, 20-200% health)
 +

 +
Mercenaries:
 +
* Mercenary Gunner - 13.3% chance (normal quality on average, 70-230% health)
 +
* Mercenary Sniper - 100% chance (normal quality on average, 70-230% health)
 +

 +
Spacers:
 +
* Space Soldier - 8.2% chance (good quality on average, 100% health)
 +

 +

 +
Sniper rifles can also be crafted at a machining table once the precision rifling research has been completed; from 60 steel, 8 components and 55000 of work.

Conclusion & Comparison
 +
The sniper rifle is an excellent weapon for dealing with siege attacks as it can reliably pick people off from a distance, so long as (as aforementioned) the shooter is also up to the task. Not only can your pawns attack enemies preemptively and potentially kill several before they get close enough to fight back, but you can also target their artillery shells and mortars in their camp; causing them to explode, damaging or killing anyone nearby, and potentially starting a wildfire. In the latter case, the fire alone can wipe out the whole camp if the raiders don't move and the weather is clear - although sieging raiders will generally attempt to extinguish fires within their camp.

While per-shot damage is high, snipers have a sluggish firerate. Their actual DPS is among the worst of firearms, just on par with the neolithic greatbow. Thus, snipers are a poor "general" weapon. If range is important, though, then snipers are a strong choice. They can be used to provoke sieges, kite centipedes, or be one of the safest weapons to hunt with. Due to poor DPS and slow firerate, it is a tedious weapon to kite with and should generally be avoided unless you really need the range.

As a shooter's personal accuracy is reduced for each tile of distance, sniper rifles are one of the most skill-heavy weapons in the game. For example, a shooter with a Shooting Accuracy of 95% (Shooting 6) would have a <code>0.95^30</code> chance, or only ~21%, to hit a target from 30 tiles. This is regardless of weapon - weapons apply another penalty after shooter-side accuracy. In contrast, a shooter with Shooting Accuracy 99% (Shooting 20) would have a ~74% shooter-side chance to hit, a DPS increase of . If using a sniper for long-range combat, then have your highest skill shooters wield it.
+
Compared to its 'little cousin', the bolt-action rifle, the sniper rifle is a bit of a wildcard: you're trading speed and accuracy for significantly increased range and damage, but all changes overall favour the sniper rifle. It may be a better idea to stick with a combination of bolt-action rifles and assault rifles for close-mid range combat in the early-mid game though until you get enough people in your colony that are competent at violence, as the sniper rifle is somewhat of a niche weapon.

Compared to the bolt-action rifle, the sniper rifle has worse firerate, DPS, and close-range accuracy in exchange for higher range, extra per-shot damage, and improved long-distance accuracy. The sniper rifle is more expensive, has a larger research requirement, and isn't common from raiders (barring sniper-only mercenary raids).

Stats
+
The below graphs assume an unmodified shooter using a Normal quality weapon.
Against an unarmored human, the sniper rifle can kill with 2 shots to the torso or 1 shot to the head, brain or any vital organ. It'll generally take around 3 hits (~20.9 seconds average) to incapacitate that human from pain shock.
