| description = Wood logs are gathered from trees using the Chop Wood command and are vital to early game construction. In addition to the initial wood you are given at the start of the game, you can also plant trees inside growing zones to create a renewable source of wood, though this tends to take over a month of in-game time before they can be harvested. Bulk goods traders will also buy and sell wood.

NOTE: Should your colony be visited by an Alphabeaver infestation, watch out! These ravenous genetically-engineered critters will eat every tree on the map if you don't stop them by force!

Stuff
Minerals
Materials are grouped in five stuff categories:

*Stony for all types of stone.

*Metallic for all metals.

*Woody for wood.

*Leathery for all leathers.

*Fabric for all fabrics.

So called "stuffable" buildings and items (walls, armchairs, longswords, plate armor etc.) have stuff tags. They determine from which stuff categories the building or item can be made of. The player can choose any material from these stuff categories to build or craft that building or item. The stats of the end product are then affected by the modifiers of the used material.

| description =  Used for trading. Silver is used for trading with traders, however each trader has a limited stock you can buy from. Silver is used to buy slaves, resources, and weapons. Additionally, traders will buy resources relevant to their specialization. Industrial Traders will buy silver, uranium, metal and wooden planks, Combat Traders will buy weapons, and Food Traders will buy food. Silver in great quantity is among the wreckage at the start of the game. After this silver is depleted, additional silver may only be obtained through random drops, trading or mining silver deposits.

Steel is the primary resource for mid to late game construction, and is therefore vital. Without steel, you cannot build new power generators, conduits, batteries, temperature regulators like coolers and heaters, or turrets and sandbags, so ensure that you have a steady supply. Steel appears at your crash site when a new game is started. After this steel is exhausted, it can be obtained through random drops, trading, mining, disassembling mechanoids, or melting slag into useable steel at an electric smelter. Steel can be mined from compacted steel veins, which can be found inside hills and mountains. Industrial traders also buy and sell steel.

* Stone can't be used for apparel. (Note that even though jade has armor and insulation modifiers, it can't be used for any type of apparel.)

| image      = Plasteel.png
 +
| description = The strongest material in the game. Used for a lot of high tech stuff, especially ship walls and other modules, which are needed to build a spaceship to escape the planet and win the game. Can be obtained by trading, disassembling dead mechanoids, or by mining compacted plasteel deposits.
 +
TIP: Plasteel can be used to make some _very_ tough defensive turrets and walls, so consider setting some aside to shore up your frontline against raiders.

| description = A very beautiful and expensive resource. Can sometimes be found off the bodies of raiders, as well as those who pop out of random cryptosleep caskets in buildings around the map, but the primary source is gold veins. You can sell gold to certain traders to get a staggering amount of cash, or craft it into golden sculptures that are perhaps the most valuable items in the game. It can also be used to create extremely beautiful furniture and structures that will help obtain that coveted "Beautiful Environment" mood bonus for your colonists, though this may be wasteful unless you are swimming in cash already and don't need much extra.

{{Stone

Used for stone construction
 +
Stone is produced from rock rubble via a Stonecutter's table after it is researched. To create stone right click the table, click 'Bills', and use the + and - buttons to set how many pieces of rubble you wish to consume. You must have a colonist with 'crafting' enabled in the Overview menu. Stone blocks are always produced in batches of 20 per rock chunk. Stone can also be obtained by deconstructing abandoned structures that are randomly scattered throughout the map, though these must be Claimed first.
 +

 +
Cut stone can be used to supplement other valuable resources, namely steel and wood. It can be used to craft walls (even the conduit walls that carry electricity), or fancy floors with faster than default walk speed and less mood penalty. Cut stone can be used to craft everything from doors, automatic doors, tables, benches, to beds and royal beds. It is also the prime resource for crafting sculptures for colonists with the Artist skill.
 +
NOTE: While doors made of stone are very hard for enemies to destroy, they also take a _long_ time to open, so consider making the Autodoor variant to save time. It also doesn't give nearly as much rest effectiveness as wooden beds do.
 +
NOTE: Stone walls and structures appear to take 3 times as much damage from explosive weapons (like Mortars) as structures made of other materials.
