You can spend a lot of time meditating at the tree, allowing your colonist to gain multiple levels of psycasts while still facing against 1-man raids. It is recommended to build a base right next to the tree, taking the -30% artificial building penalty in the process. This allows you to minimize the time spent traveling, which is very valuable with a single pawn.
