Paragraph 3 (starting ''"A researcher at..."'') appears flawed. The "mean time" of 9.2 days is the average, all the values divided by the total number of samples. The "guaranteed" time to find a lump (8 days) is, as I read it, the max - and that's listed as 8 days. One of these values is not mathematically possible. If, otoh, the "guaranteed" time (or the "mean time") is intended to mean something else, one or both needs to be rephrased.
