A constructed plant pot has a base mass of 2 kg but can be deconstructed into 10 units of its component material, or 100 for small volume materials. As these 10 units often weigh more than the 2 kg of the pot, more material can be carried for the same mass by keeping it in pot form and deconstructing it at the end of travel. For example, 10 effective* units of [[steel]] weighing {{#expr: {{Q|Steel|Mass Base}}*10}} kg can be compressed into 2 kg of plant pot, allowing you to carry {{#expr: {{Q|Steel|Mass Base}}*10/2}} times the steel you normally would.

A plant pot allows a colonist to grow decorative plants indoors or outdoors, in order to improve beauty. The plants must be resown regularly by growers and the pot cannot be used to grow crops.

Acquisition[edit]

Plant pots can be constructed, each requiring Stuff 20 Stuff (Metallic/Woody/Stony) and 250 ticks (4.17 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder and the work to build factor and offset of the material.

Summary[edit]

Once constructed, the plant pot can be sown with the following decorative plants by colonist assigned to Growing: Daylily, Rose.

The plant inside has a limited lifespan and needs to be replanted regularly by a grower in order to provide the desired beauty, and can be eaten by animals. However, growers will periodically check the plant's health, and replant in the pot if necessary.

The pot has a fertility of 100%.

    Daylily 18 540 ticks 3 days
  • Analysis[edit]

Plant pots can be a cheap and fast way to increase beauty, at the cost of a grower's time. But there may be better alternatives:

    • Sculptures of at least normal quality provide more beauty overall, and do not require constant replanting. As soon as you get an art bench and decent artist, sculptures are preferred.
    • You can grow decorative plants indoors without needing a plant pot. Simply leave a portion of the floor - or the entire floor - as dirt, then place a growing zone of the desired flower. This is even cheaper than a plant pot. However, having dirt floor is slightly less beautiful, lowers Cleanliness, and may create filth. Specifically, when a colonist steps from dirt to constructed floor, they may create filth. So if a room doesn't have the floor entirely out of dirt, plant pots may be appealing to avoid the filth creation.
    • Jade, if available, can be used to create beautiful fences. Jade fences have a beauty of 10, with a market value of Silver 6.3, and do not require constant replanting. Wood plant pots have a beauty of 14 or 18, but have a value of Silver 25. Thus, jade fences are more wealth-efficient, and do not take up valuable colonist time. However, jade may not be available in the very early game. Also, jade fences take up more space, which can hamper the Impressiveness of a small room (e.g. bedrooms).

Therefore, plant pots are mostly useful in the early game, in places with constructed floor, and before you have access to a high skill artist. Try to place pots in a central location so your growers don't have to spend so much time walking.

Although daylilies are more beautiful and take less time to sow, unless the plant pot is close to the normal workplace of your growers, roses should be planted because they only need to be tended to every 5 days.

    Resource Compression[edit]

A niche use for the plant pot is resource compression for caravaning or using transport pods. For example, 10 effective* units of steel weighing 5 kg can be compressed into 2 kg of plant pot, allowing you to carry 2.5 times the steel you normally would.

(* Resource compression has a drawback in that you will lose 50% of the invested resources - 10 out of the 20 units of material used to construct the plant pot will be lost. However, when the alternative is abandoning the material anyway due to weight restrictions, there is no reason not to do so if time permits.)
