A nutrient paste meal is produced from a nutrient paste dispenser, using raw food ingredients worth 0.3 points of nutrition (ie. the raw nutrition is tripled). When consumed, it gives a -4 mood penalty ("Ate awful meal"). The meals are dispensed on demand, and no cooking skill is required.
Nutrient paste meals never cause food poisoning.
Both herbivorous and carnivorous animals will eat nutrient paste meals without penalty, no matter what the raw ingredients were. This makes nutrient paste the most efficient animal food. One method requires the player to manually trick a nutrient paste dispenser into producing food in bulk (which may be considered a mild exploit of game mechanics). An alternative method involves setting up animals for an operation, but preventing the use medicine or drugs needed. This will cause them to rest in an animal sleeping spot and to be fed from the dispenser if no other options are readily available.
The mood penalty from eating the meal is offset by several substantial benefits:
- Nutrient paste is far more efficient than any other food type, at a 300% conversion rate from raw food to meals (simple and fine meals only convert at 180%).
- It never causes food poisoning, while cooked meals always carry at least a small chance of food poisoning.
- No cooking is necessary, completely avoiding the otherwise required work force and infrastructure, as well as the need for a competent cook.
- Eating Nutrient paste meals only gives a -4 mood debuff compared to the -7 for eating raw food
