The hood is a clothing item initially added in the Royalty DLC but now part of RimWorld core. They provide a +20% increase to Social Impact.

Nobles Content added by the Royalty DLC between Squire and Praetor rank require either one of these or one of the other alternatives, to consider themselves properly dressed and avoid a negative moodlet. The Male specific equivalent is the Top hat Content added by the Royalty DLC. The Female specific equivalent is the Ladies hat Content added by the Royalty DLC.

Acquisition

Hoods can only be made at electric or hand tailor benches which require Complex Clothing to be researched in order to be constructed. Each hood requires Stuff 50 Stuff (Fabric/Leathery) and 6,000 ticks (1.67 mins) of work.

They can also be purchased from traders, and a red hood can be found on every Bestower.Content added by the Royalty DLC

Summary

Hoods are a luxurious headgear that offers a significant boost to Social Impact (+20%) but provide mediocre armor and middling insulation. Note that social impact only affects the impact of social interactions and speech success rates. It does not affect trade prices nor prisoner recruitment, as they are instead controlled by the Trade Price Improvement and Negotiation Ability stats respectively.

Analysis

While offering an even larger social impact boost than the Bowler hat's 15%, hoods cost more, provide no armor, and offer inferior cold resistance and HP. Thus they are inferior to, should be exchanged for, literally any other headgear unless required by a noble or the social impact buff is required. The hood should never be worn when protection is required - they can be worn in non-combat situations, and switched for a helmet on the battlefield

Notable as the unisex option of headwear for nobles up to the rank of Praetor, and only requiring Complex Clothing to be researched, not Noble Apparel. These two factors can make it a superior option to the Top Hat and Ladies Hat for noble titled pawns for several reasons. First it allows headwear to more easily be handed down as pawns advance through ranks without concern for gender. Second, it allows easier and cheaper automation of worn-clothes replacement, as only one type needs to be kept in inventory. Lastly it allows Noble Apparel research to be delayed or, depending on how the other clothes requirements are met, potentially even skipped. It also has a different insulation profile - offering superior heat insulation and inferior cold resistance to the gendered hats. Though a small bonus, this can also be relevant in chosing which to use.

The hood is also noteworthy as a headwear providing some temperature insulation, but no physical protection. As it is also slaveContent added by the Ideology DLC suppression neutral, this can make it an attractive option for slave use.

  • Trivia

Every bestower Content added by the Royalty DLC will wear a red hood.

This is one of very few items to transition between DLC and Core, originally being introduced as part of the Royalty DLC but latter being integrated into the base game. The techprint is the only other known example, but it did the reverse.

    Version history

    • Added by the 1.2 update with Bestowers.
    • 1.2.2753 - Insulation against cold increased from 0 to 0.1x, insulation against heat increased from 0 to 0.25x.
    • 1.3.3066 - Made craftable. Transferred from Royalty DLC to RimWorld Core. Work To Make increased from 1,200 ticks to 6,000 ticks.
    • 1.3.3200 - Armor multipliers increased from 0 to 0.2
