About this board

What do people think about this section? It basically reads as "build lots of traps" to me, which may be seen more as a niche gameplay tactic, especially so early in the game. I just added a picture from a game showing walls instead. Perhaps it's more playstyle on my end as well, but I much prefer to set up a basic defense with wood walls around the base. In the very early game it could be useful to have one side open, protected by sandbags, so raiders and animals will attack from that side, instead of trying to burn or hack through your vulnerable walls. Later you can build wood walls around the entire base, with a section outside protected by sandbags, so you have a solid-ish defensive position. And yet later you build stone walls around the base's perimeter, perhaps gradually expanding it, or have a second layer of stone walls. I would think this is a more traditional approach than lots of traps?

I haven't tried to rewrite the section as I'm new here and not sure how touchy it would be. Nevertheless, the bit about the traps in a checkerbased patterns is kind of moot now, since in later versions of game the traps must be one tile apart in both directions. So we can't build an impenetrable trap walls, which I understand was possible in early betas. Pangaea (talk) 02:54, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

With the poor weapons available to early tribes, traps have been the only thing that's really effective for me. Early threats like your first manhunter animal and your first raid work like a "test run" to show you the pathing enemies will take towards your base. Building wall sections with traps that interrupt those paths is absolutely the best way for a tribe to defend themselves early on. And personally I continue to use that as my primary form of defense even after I get turrets researched. The only thing I've been thinking I need to change is that now I believe wood spike traps are great. In a wood-heavy biome the vast majority of my traps are wood.

A wall around the outside of the base is more the sort of big project I'll begin to tackle in my second in-game year after researching stonecutting. It may be a personal pet peeve of mine, but I try to never build wood walls unless it's an emergency and I have no choice. Even if I'm using mods that make it take much longer to research stonecutting. I don't want to recommend wood walls to new players at all. The person who worked on this article before me did recommend them, though, so I just tried to describe why stone walls are a safer choice.
