The growing area has a space of 4x6 allowing it to yield 24 potato plants at a time. By using growing areas, you can increase your colonies chance for survival by creating a larger food source.

Growing areas cannot be created inside buildings or inside mines, it needs an open area available to sunlight in order for the plants to grow.

Target Practice

Drafted colonists can target and attack the dumping area, which makes it useful for training the colonists shooting ability.
It is highly advised to select the growing area and forbid growing on it, this minimizes the risk of colonists being killed in the crossfire when the stupid idiots tries to grow potatoes on it. </translate>
